IKEA

IKEA

$89   -   $3,099  | 3.8

Ikea’s strengths lie in affordability, options and comfort. Many sofas also include an extended warranty and the brand is publically dedicated to social and environmental responsibility.

On the other hand, you get what you pay for. You can find numerous stylish and comfortable sofas; however, the materials aren’t as high quality as those used by higher-end furniture brands and the couches can be inconvenient to assemble.

CRATE & BARREL

CRATE & BARREL

$499   -   $6,699 | 4.0

WEST ELM

WEST ELM

$400  -  6,595 |  4.0

West Elm is one of the most stylish brands in upholstered furniture. The furniture-maker also offers a wide array of custom sofa options, which afford the shopper more control over fabrics, configurations and models.

On the other hand, West Elm recently fielded media attention over durability and customer experience complaints. They also lack transparency in regards to sustainability and safety considerations.

Pottery Barn

POTTERY BARN

$800  -  $5,000 |  4.1

Pottery Barn has a large collection of styles, fabrics, and configurations (pull-outs and sizes). Pottery Barn’s strengths come from its dedication to quality materials and ability to customize.

These perks come at a cost. Pricing varies, but most are on the higher side of the spectrum with long wait times.

CB2

CB2

$899  -  $5,000 |  3.9

As the more moderately priced and more modern design of Crate and Barrel, CB2 offers reliable quality for slightly less money.  Overall quality remains, though some design changes and fewer varieties to meet the lower price point.

Another way CB2 keeps costs down is by manufacturing a large number of sofas in China.

WAYFAIR

WAYFAIR

$210  -  18,780 |  3.9

Simply put, you can find just about any type of furniture on Wayfair. The couch selection ranges from dirt cheap to wildly expensive. The company carries every brand outside of major retailers (West Elm, CB2, etc.) and new brands (Burrow, Joybird, etc.).

While the wide variety of options can be a positive, it’s challenging to understand the differences between couches. If you’re on a budget though, you can usually find something that matches your style if you’re willing to take a risk on quality and experience.
